Argentina vs. Australia World Cup Odds: Argentina Opens as Heavy Favorite Over Australia in Knockout Stage

The Argentina national team showed up with their backs against the wall in the World Cup on Wednesday afternoon. Facing a tough Poland team, Argentina broke through for two goals in the second half to notch a 2-0 victory and punch their ticket to the knockout stage. Their next test will come against an Australia team that enjoyed a dream run through the Group Stage. Check out the Argentina-Australia odds for the match on Saturday, via DraftKings:

World Cup Odds: Argentina-Australia Odds

  • Argentina: -550
  • Draw: +650
  • Australia: +1500

Argentina is currently +500 to win the World Cup, which is tied with France and behind only Brazil (+275). Their championship hopes almost came crashing to a heartbreaking ending on Tuesday. After losing to Saudi Arabia earlier in the tournament, Argentina needed a win (or Mexico loss) or they would be eliminated.

The Argentinians came out of the gates hot, but were stymied by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who stopped a Lionel Messi penalty kick in the waning moment of the first half to keep the game at a scoreless tie.

Fortunately for Messi — who is likely playing his last World Cup — his supporting cast was there to help him out. Mac Allister found the back of the net in the beginning of the 2nd half to give Argentina the lead. Julian Alvarez then tacked on another goal to give the team some breathing room.

The Australia team followed up a win against Tunisia with an upset victory over Denmark on Tuesday. This is the first time since 2006 that Australia has made it past the Group Stage of the World Cup. That and their overall talent level and play is why they enter as underdogs on the Argentina-Australia odds board.
