The Aztecs are riding some momentum during a two-game winning streak that includes a 43-27 win against the San Jose State Spartans last Saturday. Quarterback Jalen Mayden had one of his best games, throwing for three touchdowns and also was dynamic in the run game. This was a huge statement for an offense that has averaged 321.0 yards per game, and the Aztecs are going to need the same production in a different environment Friday.
The Aztecs also need to see drastic improvement on defense, ranking last in passing yards allowed per game in the conference.
New Mexico Looking to Finish Strong
This is not the season New Mexico (2-8, 0-6 Mountain West Mountain) had in mind, but it has a golden opportunity to have a strong finish, starting Friday night. Last week in a tough 35-3 loss to the Air Force Falcons, the Lobos failed to get anything going on offense, which put their defense in a tough spot. If they want any chance of pulling off an upset, they are going to need a spark from their offense, which ranks last in the Mountain West in yards per game. San Diego State has struggled to defend the pass, so look for New Mexico to take advantage of that weakness.
New Mexico ranks 81st in the FBS in points allowed per game (29.0), and San Diego State showed the ability to light up the scoreboard last week.

Though San Diego State is going to come in and think it has an easy win on the way, it has played down to its competition multiple times this season, and that could make for a much closer game than expected. New Mexico hosts as a 14-point underdog, and the last thing it wants to do on Senior Night is get embarrassed. Though San Diego State should win, back New Mexico to cover this spread as they can keep things close if they take advantage of the Aztecs’ weaknesses.
Though neither offense is among the most explosive in the nation, expect points to be scored. With as rough as New Mexico has looked on defense, San Diego State will keep it on its heels and find success in both the run and pass game. This total is set at 37.5 points, so look to bet the over.
