Wofford vs. Virginia Tech Betting Odds & Prediction: Hokies Will Dominate But Won’t Hit Over (September 17)

Virginia Tech started the year in an embarrassing fashion, losing to little brother Old Dominion for the second time in four years. The Hokies bounced back with a solid win over Boston College, but that opening-night loss stings.

Coach Brent Pry and the Hokies are probably looking forward to some reprieve with this game against Wofford. The Terriers finished 1-10 last season in the FCS. However, Wofford only lost to North Carolina 34-14, meaning they theoretically can cover this huge spread.

Wofford vs. Virginia Tech Week 3 College Football Betting Picks

Wofford Terriers

Wofford has played two FCS games this season, going 0-2 and losing by a combined score of 57-0. Yes, Wofford hasn’t scored a single point in two games. And both came against FCS opponents in Chattanooga and Elon.

The quarterback has completed 50% of his passes for less than 200 yards through two games. He’s thrown two picks and been sacked five times.

The whole team has just 23 first downs through two games. This handicap will come down to if Virginia Tech cares to cover this number.

Virginia Tech Hokies

That was a bad loss against Old Dominion. However, College Football Data has Virginia Tech’s post-game win expectancy at 99%. The Hokies were better on Standard Downs and Passing Downs and produced seven drives past Old Dominion’s 40-yard line while only allowing four. They out-gained Old Dominion 333 yards to 249 yards. In other words, Virginia Tech was the better team that day in every way except the final score.

It proved that by dominating Boston College in Week 2. The Hokies dominated Boston College in the same way they dominated Old Dominion, but they capitalized on their opportunities and came away with a 27-10 victory.

Virginia Tech’s issue is red zone scoring. It struggled to punch the ball in against Old Dominion on the road in Week 1 and then did it again in Week 2. The Hokies have a whopping 2.0 points per opportunity through two weeks, which ranks lower than any all but eight teams in the FBS.

There is some worry around the offensive line, although lead back Keshawn King has been great. There should be some positive regression for the Hokies, but it’s a question mark.

The defense looks fantastic through two weeks, ranking among the top 15 teams in both Standard Downs Success rate and Passing Downs Success Rate. That should carry through to Wofford with no issues.

Wofford vs. Virginia Tech Pick

Virginia Tech has won nine of the last 10 against FCS opponents, but it has covered just three of those games. The Hokies are definitely motivated to stomp a team after the Week 1 loss; however they won’t get past this number.

Wofford hasn’t scored a single point this season, while Virginia Tech’s defense has looked superb against two FBS teams. There is little chance the Terriers score in this game, even if they face the Hokies second-team defense in the second half.

Given Virginia Tech hasn’t had a great history of covering against FCS opponents and Wofford can’t move the ball against a low-tier FCS school, take the under. The Hokies will dominate, but perhaps not to a 50-0 victory.

The Hokies will shut out the Terriers and score between 30 and 40 points, making under 47.5 the play. It is playable considerably lower if the line moves that way.
