When speaking to the media earlier in the week, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid indicated that Toney could be able to pick up the offense earlier than expected.
“He’s a smart kid,” Reid said on Wednesday via ChiefsWire. “He’s been with us a couple days, so we’ve had a chance to talk to him. He picks things up fairly easily. He was with (Giants Offensive Coordinator Mike) Kafka too – Mike – he knows a little bit of the plays, terminology even though they’re using mostly the Buffalo things, a little bit of it’s familiar to him. At least he has a little bit of a foundation, somewhat of a foundation.”
After a strong rookie campaign for the Giants during the 2021-22 season, Toney had found himself on the outside looking in as new Giants head coach Brian Daboll was sorting through his receiver room.
Appearing in just two games on the season, Toney has just two receptions on three targets, and will undoubtedly welcome the opportunity to join Reid and Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City.
The Chiefs likely have big plans for Toney in their high-powered offense, but it might take some time before we see exactly where he fits in with Marquez Valdez-Scantling, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman and the rest of the weapons in Kansas City.
