The Boston Bruins host the Vancouver Canucks in what should be an exciting game Sunday evening. Boston coach Jim Montgomery shuffled its lines a bit Saturday in a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
The Bruins reunited the Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak line, and it did not disappoint. They produced the game-clinching goal in what was a masterful play, and whenever this line skates together, it is almost a certainty that at least one of them finds the back of the net at some point during the game.
This should be no different as they are slated to go against a terrible defense and struggling goalie. At 5v5, Vancouver ranks 27th in the NHL in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). Backing up this poor defense is goalie Thatcher Demko, who through 10 starts is 1-7-2 with an .874 save percentage and a 4.01 GAA.
Bergeron has seven assists over his previous 13 games, and Marchand has scored four goals in the seven games he has played since returning from injury.
It remains to be seen if Montgomery sticks with the Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak line on Sunday. But even if he switches up the lines again, those three could still generate plenty of offense on the first power-play unit.
This season, the Canucks rank 28th in penalty minutes. Not only do they spend a ton of time in the box, but they struggle mightily to kill those penalties, ranking dead last in penalty kill at a staggering 61.2%.
If this first line is split up, it is still highly likely they score on special teams. If they stick together at 5v5, then this play carries even more value at 7-2.
