The Bruins would have been a Stanley Cup contender even if they opted to stand pat at the Trade Deadline. But they added a true top-four defenseman when acquiring Dmitry Orlov from the Washington Capitals, a top-six forward when getting Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings and a nice depth piece in forward Garnet Hathaway.

“There’ll be some tinkering because we’ll have the options to do it,” Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said of his new lineup, per NESN. ” … I think Bertuzzi is another player who can play every position except for center.”

The Bruins were able to fill the void left by injuries to Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno. The team announced earlier in the week that Hall would be placed on IR with a lower-body injury. It is unlikely that either forward will be returning during the regular season.

“That’s why we needed to go out and add another player that can come in and help us win hockey games right now,” Montgomery said.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney did what fans want always want their front office to do with a great team: go all-in. Now, Boston is in ‘championship or bust mode’ and the latest Stanley Cup odds show they are even more likely to get the job done than they were prior to the moves.

Bostonians have a lot to be excited about with their current sports team, and it is entirely possible that we’ll be seeing the Bruins treat those avid fans with yet another championship run this year.
