2022 BMW Championship Sleeper Picks: Best Longshot Bets for Emiliano Grillo & Davis Riley (Monday, August 15)

Things will certainly tighten up this weekend as the FedEx Championship heads to Delaware for the first time on the second leg of the playoffs. The field is down to 69 after Cam Smith withdrew and doesn’t have a cut for the weekend. It’s harder for any player with mid-range odds to win this event — at one of the easiest courses at tour — let alone a longshot, but that adds to the value. Below we’re looking at the best 2022 BMW Championship longshot golf bets for the week and trying to be the ones posting the HUGE PAYOUT screenshots on Twitter.

This course is absurdly easy but has one of the strongest fields seen all season, compacted by the low number of participants matched with a high Official World Golf Ranking. Any true longshot in this event is going to have an added amount of value tagged to their name simply because of the depth of the field, but that doesn’t mean someone can’t break through and win it. Emiliano Grillo is one golfer who fits that bill, as Wilmington Country Club truly rewards approach shots, lag putting and birdies or better. Getting off the tee or avoiding the sand isn’t a priority, as this course is long but straight and any hills are simply raised off flat surface.

Grillo plays far better with his wedges and putter than any 150-1 longshot should be on this course, no matter how tough the field is. He ranks 16th on tour in approach shots from 125 to 150 yards and 29th in birdies or better. As Ben Rasa noted on this week’s Putting for Dough, if anyone is scrambling around the greens, they have bigger issues than sand saves. While that is 100% true, it also means distancing oneself from the pack requires being even more precise in setting up scoring opportunities. It may be a longshot that Grillo wins this thing, but it’s nowhere near 150-1.

One great thing to take advantage of is laddering longer shots like Grillo. It helps mitigate some risk while maximizing the return when one of these guys does go on a tear. Playing talent or playing the number can help scale down viable targets for longshot bets in these types of events. Finding the sweet spot of both is where young Davis Riley finds himself. He has shown tons of promise on tour, securing his trip to Delaware with a -6 last week in Memphis. Riley is top 50 in strokes gained tee to green and total strokes gained yet finds himself as a distant longshot to compete with the top part of the field. While it’s not the same strength, Davis has stuck around for the weekend a bunch this year — including six top-10s and four top-5s.

Looking at other golfers around that same number, Riley stands out with his value. He is 17th on tour this year in birdies or better and will continue to create scoring chances on this weak track.

Adam Scott led the field in putting last week, and if he’s anywhere near that in Delaware, he will walk away in the top 10. There has been some up and down with his play this season, but he’s settled in over the last couple of weeks. He was on the bubble to advance to the BMW and blew away most of the field with a top-five finish in Memphis. The biggest advantage anyone will have this week will be lag putting and birdies off approach shots. Scott has been key in making up for any mistakes getting to the green with his flatstick. Sitting at 30th on tour in birdies or better, Scott has another chance to at the very least hang with this tough field, if not separate himself with his putter.

Best Ladder Bet: Adam Scott (Top 20 +160, DraftKings)
