Trey Lance Fantasy Football Replacements: Are Jimmy Garoppolo or Marcus Mariota Worth a Waiver Wire Pickup For Week 3?

Unfortunately for fantasy football owners who bought in on the potential of Trey Lance, they’ll now be left scrambling for a replacement after just two weeks of the season.

Lance has been ruled out for the remainder of the year after breaking his ankle in Week 2 against the Seahawks. It’s already time for fantasy players to search for a replacement. They might look no further than the man set to replace Lance under center, Jimmy Garoppolo. But is he is the best option?

Is Jimmy Garoppolo worth a waiver wire pickup in fantasy football?

In our NFL Start/Sit Fantasy Football Rankings, we currently have Garoppolo ranked as the #31 quarterback on the board, with several other potential QB’s ranked as better options for Week 3.

For instance, we have Marcus Mariota ranked at #12 on our list (owned in just 9.3% of ESPN leagues). Mariota has thrown for 477 yards and two touchdowns so far this season, while adding 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

“I guess as you look at it, you try to move forward but to answer your question, there were a lot of positives,” Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said of Mariota’s performance in the Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. “You don’t want to sit there and make excuses and that’s why I’m careful because you don’t want to sound like you’re patting yourself because we don’t know what the end result was but there were. I thought we were pretty effective moving the football and I thought he made some really good decisions for us. So, it was good to see.

“I think he started one game within the last two and a half years, give or take, he was dialed in and ready to go. Made some big-time throws when we needed them and certainly made some plays with his legs and there are a lot of things we ask him to do at the line of scrimmage.”

Mariota ranks as the 12th quarterback in fantasy football points on the season so far. Perhaps he’ll continue to rack up yards through the air and ground over the course of the year.

Mariota and the 0-2 Falcons will look for their first win when they take on the Seahawks this Sunday.
