2022 Fortinet Championship Sleeper Picks: Gary Woodland’s Long Odds Are HUGE Value in Weaker Field

Welcome to swing season on the PGA Tour. There is no Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm or Scottie Scheffler here; instead, Silverado is headlined by Max Homa, Hideki Matsuyama and Corey Conners. With a thinner field comes more emphasis on some key metrics like driving distance and strokes gained tee to green and moving away from putting and scrambling.

Below we’re looking at the best 2022 Fortinet Championship longshot golf bets for the week and trying to be the ones posting the HUGE PAYOUT screenshots on Twitter.

This field is devoid of some major names on tour, playing at a course that offers little resistance around the green. Anyone who has longer odds that can get off the tee and strike their irons is in contention. Homa, Matsuyama and Conners don’t have the ability to pull away from any other long hitters come Thursday, which puts Woodland in play as a 60-1 longshot.

With the emphasis on driving distance, iron striking, and putting, Woodland is a perfect middle in this Venn Diagram of metrics. It’s also important to note that, without bigger names in this tournament, someone who normally has strong stats gets an even bigger boost to the field.

Woodland finished the year with some notable numbers that immediately help him at Silverado. He finished 23rd on tour in driving distance, which is a necessary stat for recent winners at this course. Getting to the green on any second shot is also imperative. Woodland can do that, as he finished 34th in strokes gained tee to green. Finally, while there isn’t as strong of a play on good putters, it’s certainly something that helps any long hitter like Woodland, as he ranked 60th in putting.

This is as close to a complete player in these three metrics in this thin of a field. Woodland has won only four times on tour and stands as good a chance as anyone 60-1 or longer to win.

This is another opportunity to take advantage of a price that better reflects a more top-heavy field. Mullinax is a 60-1 longshot to win this event, like Woodland, and is priced more like a heavier field of talent exists. Mullinax won the Barbasol earlier this year and more recently took home a top-five at the FedEx in Memphis. He’s played well in larger fields and has some solid numbers to back it, including three top-10s on the season. The recent success he’s had is a great catapult into Silverado, where he can attack a weaker field off the tee.

Mullinax was ninth on tour in driving distance, averaging 317.2 on tee shots. That’s right there with recent winners who bombed off the tee. He also improved strokes gained tee to green down the stretch, as he improved to 64th at season’s end. His performance at the FedEx was impressive despite having his worst day, a 70, on Sunday. Putting will be a serious question for this budding young star, but it’s not as important with a weak course and field.
