2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open Long Shot Golf Bets: Sepp Straka and Callum Tarren Are Good Value in Houston

This week the PGA Tour heads to Houston for the final three-week stretch before a monthlong break. It’s another opportunity for some of the top golfers to drop in on a difficult course surrounded by beautiful scenery. The likes of Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, Sam Burns and Hideki Matsuyama will join the field at Memorial Park as Swing Season winds down. This continues to provide value for longer shots, including dropping odds for golfers who have been more mid-range in Swing Season than huge dogs. Let’s take a look at some 2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open Long Shot Golf Bets, including Sepp Straka.

It should be stated that Memorial Park is not an easy place to play. It’s meant to reflect conditions rarely seen on tour, namely Major tournaments. The course is long with five par 4’s at 490+ and one par 3 sitting north of 230 yards. Length off the tee will certainly be a key metric of importance, but more importantly consistent and accurate ball striking. Sepp Straka is just one of five players in the current field with a T-5 finish in one of the first two years at Memorial Park. He knows the course, has finished strong here, and has the ability to strike the ball at a top level, get off the tee with plenty of distance, and putt well on Bermuda grass.

Something else that should help a longer shot like Straka is the absence of some golfers who also fit the mold for Memorial. Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson being two names at the top. Straka is already looked at by some as hovering around a breakthrough moment. Something similar to what we all saw at the Honda Classic, RBC, and St. Jude. He’s defeated heavier fields than this while finding his comfort zone, and in this case, the course may do enough damage to those either unfamiliar or unprepared.

Straka is a 70-1 ticket with proven history against this course and a stronger field. The number reflects more of an erratic performance rather than poor overall, and is worth a serious look if he returns to any consistent form.

Outright Honorable Mention

Just looking at the overall needs to be successful at this course alone, and not the remainder of the field, a golfer like Callum Tarren might jump out as mispriced. He currently sits as a 200-1 long shot to win, which he certainly is a long shot, but he does fit in areas that are sure to cause issues for plenty of golfers above him. Tarren has made just one cut this season, a T-13 at Sanderson Farms, which heavily impacts his longer odds. But for a 200-1 ticket, Tarren enters 27th in SG: Putting, at a course where exceptional putters like Denny McCarthy seem to thrive. He’s 69th in SG: OTT and 83rd in SG: APP – two areas where he can gain leverage to the field.

Long Shot Outright Winner Bet: Callum Tarren (+20000 DraftKings)
