This year’s Memphis Grizzlies lack the depth that last year’s team had. Gone are Kyle Anderson and De’Anthony Melton, who both played sizeable roles off the bench. Ziaire Williams remains out with an injury, and although Jaren Jackson Jr. is set to return, the Grizzlies still must run a shorter rotation than what they ran last season.
With Desmond Bane sidelined, Dillon Brooks should have a slightly larger role at wing. Brooks only played two games that Bane missed last season, and he scored 30 and 18 points in those matchups — although he only hit one triple in both games.
Brooks should also benefit from the matchup. He has spent 86% of his minutes at small forward, the position the Pelicans have surrendered the second-most points per game to this season (26.2). Their troubles date back to last season — Brooks scored 23 points against the Pelicans in the only two games he played against them last year. He nailed three triples in one game and two in another.
The books have set Brooks’ three-point total to a reasonable 2.5, but his point total is far too low at 17.5 Although there’s always the concern that Brooks gets into early foul trouble and sees his minutes reduced, the Grizzlies just don’t have a long enough bench to not give Brooks plenty of opportunities tonight.
