Darcy Kuemper Continues to Roll Against the Yotes

The Metropolitan Division’s Washington Capitals host the Central Division’s Arizona Coyotes. There have now been six or fewer total goals scored in seven of the last eight meetings between these two clubs, a trend that should continue on Saturday night.

These are two of the worst offenses in hockey thus far this season. At 5v5, the Yotes rank dead last in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) while the Capitals rank 26th.

Although Arizona’s offensive struggles were predictable before the season started, Washington’s lack of offensive efficiency is clearly due to all the guys on their injured list. T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, Carl Hagelin, and Tom Wilson are all slated to once again miss this game.

Projected to start between the pipes for the Caps is goaltender Darcy Kuemper, who has been rolling since jumping ship from Colorado over the off-season. Through nine starts, Kuemper is 4-4-1 with a .922 SV% and 2.35 GAA.

That combination of record and stats confirms how strong he has been and how poorly the offense has performed. Among starting goaltenders, Kuemper ranks seventh in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx/60) at 5v5.

Across eight career starts against his former team, he is 5-0-3 with a .955 SV%, 1.11 GAA, and three shutouts.

Expect Strong Defense in Montreal

The Atlantic Division’s Montreal Canadiens host the Pacific Division’s Vegas Golden Knights in what should be another low-scoring affair. Entering this contest, the under has been a strong bet for each team this season as it has gone 14-6 through 20 combined games.

At 5v5, both of these teams rank inside the top half of the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). While Vegas’ defensive play is not shocking given its personnel, the Habs have done surprisingly well despite dressing four rookie defensemen.

Backing up these two defenses are two strong goaltenders. Projected to take the crease for the Golden Knights is goaltender Logan Thompson, who has been incredible between the pipes since taking over the starting role this season.

Through eight starts, Thompson is 6-2 with a .934 SV% and 2.01 GAA. Among starting goaltenders, he ranks fourth in GSAx/60 at 5v5.

Across the ice, goaltender Jake Allen is projected to start for Montreal. Across seven starts this season, he is 3-4 with a .908 SV% and 2.88 GAA.

Among starting goaltenders, Allen ranks 14th in GSAx/60 at 5v5. With two solid defenses and two strong goaltenders, seven is likely too many goals for this contest.

Best NHL Parlay Bet: Vegas/Montreal Under 6.5 (-115)
