Two 2-1 teams, tied at the top of the AFC North, on a short week in Cleveland.
Pittsburgh has won its two the way Pittsburgh wins: Jaylen Warren has 216 rushing yards on 38 carries and Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 700 yards without needing to carry the offense. Cleveland has been the more surprising 2-1. Deshaun Watson is completing 68 percent of his throws with five touchdowns to one interception, and Quinshon Judkins has given the Browns a run game to lean on.
The market has the Steelers as a short road favorite. Before I tell you where I landed, call the score you see. The tool above hands you the markets that fit it.
Why Pittsburgh Is Favored On The Road
Pittsburgh to win is 59¢ and Cleveland is 43¢, which puts the Steelers a hair under 60 percent to win in a building where they have not been comfortable. The spread lines say the same thing in smaller steps: Pittsburgh by 4 or more is 43¢, by 7 or more is 34¢. Cleveland by 5 or more is 27¢.
The total is the low one on the Thursday card. Over 38.5 is 49¢ and Over 37.5 is 53¢, so the market's number sits right at 38. Two defenses that have kept scores down, a short week, and a forecast of 76 degrees with a 30 percent chance of rain and 14 mile-an-hour gusts off the lake. Nobody expects a shootout, and the price says so.
Steelers: Warren Carries It, Rodgers Manages It
The Run Game Is The Offense
Warren is averaging 5.7 yards a carry through three games, and with Rico Dowdle out with a toe injury, the load is his. That is fine by Pittsburgh. The Steelers' formula is a lead, a run game that holds it, and a defense that closes.
Rodgers Has Not Had To Win One Yet
Seven hundred yards, four touchdowns, two picks, and Roman Wilson as the leading receiver at 114 yards. It has been careful football. The question Thursday is whether careful is enough on the road against a defense that has held its own.
The Secondary Question
Jalen Ramsey is questionable with a wrist, and Brandin Echols is in the concussion protocol. Watson has thrown for 587 yards in three games, and Denzel Boston has 195 of them with two scores. If Ramsey cannot go, Boston is the matchup Cleveland goes to.
Browns: Watson's Best Stretch, Judkins' Arrival
Watson Is Playing Clean
Fifty-six of 82 for 587 yards, five touchdowns, one interception. That is the best three-game stretch Watson has had in Cleveland, and it has come with the offensive line banged up. Teven Jenkins is out with a back injury, and Tytus Howard and Elgton Jenkins are both questionable. Against T.J. Watt on a short week, the line is the whole story for the Browns.
Judkins Changes The Math
Forty-two carries for 124 yards is not a headline number, but it is a run game Cleveland can lean on when the line is shorthanded, and it keeps Watt from teeing off every snap.
The Home Number
Cleveland at home as a short underdog is a spot the Browns have made a living in against Pittsburgh. Forty-three cents to win is the price of that history.
My Take
I have Pittsburgh, and I have it close. The Steelers' run game against a Browns line missing Teven Jenkins and possibly two more starters is the edge I trust, and Rodgers has not needed to do more than manage it. But 59¢ to win on the road is not a price I love, and by 4 or more at 43¢ asks for a cover in a game the market sees at 38 points.
The number I like is the total. Under 38.5 at 51¢ is where both teams' identities point: run games, defenses, a short week, weather. Call your own score above and see what the page hands you. If you see a shootout, the page will tell you what that costs.
