Michigan is 1-0, and the tape says the Wolverines lost. They needed a disputed, clock-restored 47-yard Hail Mary from Bryce Underwood to JJ Buchanan to get past Western Michigan 13-12 on September 5, 2026, with the Big Ten office reviewing whether the clock should have read 0:00 or 0:01 (Detroit News, September 6, 2026). In between the opening drive and that final snap sat 50 minutes and 20 seconds of nothing (Heavy.com, September 7, 2026), and Underwood's 31.4 PFF passing grade was the second-worst mark among 110 qualifying FBS quarterbacks in Week 1 (GBMWolverine, September 7, 2026). That team hosts Oklahoma in Week 2, and the number attached to this piece is Oklahoma minus 5.5, a figure that came with the assignment rather than off a book screen. Here is what broke in Ann Arbor, why the Sooners' front is the worst possible follow-up, and where a cover this size can still come apart.
Michigan Won By A Point And Lost The Game Everywhere It Counts
Start with the box. Michigan put up 276 total yards on 48 plays, converted 3 of 10 third downs, took 9 penalties and gave the ball away, including a Underwood scramble fumble with 1:40 left that set up Western Michigan's go-ahead field goal (Detroit News, September 6, 2026). ESPN's ledger for the game has Michigan losing time of possession 40:08 to 19:52 and turning it over three times to Western Michigan's zero (ESPN, September 5, 2026). Heavy.com counted eight empty possessions between the scores: six punts, an interception and a fumble.
Underwood is the center of it. He finished 12-of-22 for 170 yards with a touchdown, an interception and a lost fumble, drew a 38.5 PFF grade and an F from a Michigan beat outlet, which wrote that his accuracy and footwork problems from 2025 came back (GBM Wolverine, September 7, 2026). "Underwood has a tough time with easy throws. He can rocket the ball down the field or across the middle," that grade read. PFF's split had his overall offensive mark at 35.8, the worst on Michigan's offense.
The obvious pushback is that Western Michigan is a real team. It is, up to a point. The Broncos were the coaches' MAC preseason favorite on July 22, 2026, taking 138 points and nine first-place votes ahead of Miami's 134 (Western Michigan Athletics), and they won the 2025 MAC title at 10-4, 8-1 in league play, though they lost defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary and 14.5-sack pass rusher Nadame Tucker to the NFL (ESPN, May 1, 2026). But the national number on them never moved with the conference hype: ESPN's Bill Connelly had Western Michigan 94th in preseason SP+ in that May preview, and the final preseason ratings published August 13, 2026 put the Broncos 90th overall at minus-6.0 with 5.5 projected wins. Michigan needed a rules dispute to avoid losing to a bottom-half-of-FBS opponent at home.
What the research did not bring back is how other Power Four teams handled MAC opponents in Week 1, so there is no spectrum here to place the 13-12 on. Take it on its own terms, which are bad enough.
The New Offense Has No Run Game And No Pocket
The passing grade was not one quarterback having one afternoon. Michigan ran it 25 times for 106 yards, 4.2 a carry by one recap's math, and Underwood led the team with 9 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Marshall got 11 carries for 44, true freshman Savion Hiter 5 for 15. Western Michigan out-rushed them 46 for 132 (CBS Sports Gametracker, September 5, 2026). Of those 25 called carries, three went for 10 or more yards, with Marshall's long a 15-yard fourth-quarter run and PFF crediting the whole backfield with three missed tackles forced, two by Marshall, one by Underwood, none by Hiter (Yahoo Sports, September 7, 2026).
Protection matched it. The line gave up 14 total pressures, 2 sacks, 4 quarterback hits and 8 hurries to a MAC front, extending problems the unit had in 2025 (Maize n Brew, September 7, 2026). Kyle Whittingham, Michigan's first-year head coach, conceded the run side on September 7, 2026: "We do, we're not blocking up the run game yet, we weren't as violent. I said the offensive line wasn't poor, but we need to be more violent overall. The running backs starts there, but more finishing blocks. We gotta finish the block better" (SI.com).
That is the part that should move a number rather than get waved off as Week 1 rust. Jason Beck, hired as Michigan's offensive coordinator on January 2, 2026, arrived from a 2025 Utah offense that ranked 4th nationally in yards per game, 5th in scoring and 2nd in rushing (mgoblue.com). Whittingham brought the whole offensive staff with him, including a dedicated quarterback coach in Koy Detmer, which Underwood did not have as a true freshman in 2025 (247Sports, January 7, 2026). Michigan also returned 72% of its offensive production, 6th nationally, per ESPN's returning-production data (SI.com, March 24, 2026). Continuity plus that pedigree produced 276 yards. There is no reason to assume the fix is one week away.
The gap in the research: no snap counts or per-man grades for Michigan's five line starters, so this piece cannot tell you which spot is leaking.
Oklahoma's Front Is The Wrong Answer To That Offense
Now line that offense up against what it sees next. Oklahoma's 2025 defense under Brent Venables finished 3rd nationally with 45 sacks and 2nd with 122 tackles for loss, ranked top-10 in both total and scoring defense, and returns all 11 projected 2026 starters as homegrown signees with zero portal replacements and 27 combined seasons in the system (Storming In Norman, August 21, 2026). "Going from good to great is a small step, but it's the hardest step by a long way," Venables said. Inside, defensive tackle David Stone posted a 13.0% run-stop rate in 2025, second among all FBS defensive tackles behind only Ohio State's Kayden McDonald, and PFF slotted him 31st on its preseason top-50 for 2026 (SI.com, July 9, 2026).
Week 1 looked the part. In the UTEP shutout the Sooners forced two turnovers with 4 sacks and 10 tackles for loss, with the beat flagging only missed tackles and leaked contain (SI Oklahoma, September 5, 2026). PFF's grades had safety Peyton Bowen at 81.0, linebacker Owen Heinecke at 77.7 and edge Adepoju Adebawore at 76.7 with the team's first sack; the lone soft mark was linebacker Kip Lewis at 57.4 for missed tackles. Edge Danny Okoye, inactive for the opener, has been cleared for Michigan (The Oklahoman via Yahoo Sports, September 8, 2026).
The honest counterweight: Oklahoma ranks 57th nationally in defensive returning production, against 3rd on offense and 16th overall (ESPN, March 23, 2026). The continuity claim here is about starters coming back, not total snaps. No rotation detail or snap counts from the UTEP game came back either, so how much of that front plays on passing downs is not something this piece can show you.
Where The Cover Breaks
The doubt is Oklahoma's own line. Six offensive linemen left in the portal this offseason as part of at least 26 total departures (SI.com, January 18, 2026). True freshman Noah Best started at center against UTEP after injuries to Jake Maikkula and Ryan Fodje, the first Sooner true freshman to start a season opener at center since J.R. Conrad in 1992 (Storming In Norman, September 4, 2026). Left tackle Michael Fasusi lasted 17 snaps before his shoulder forced him out, with Peyton Joseph (27 snaps) and Fred Hinton (15) splitting the rest (SI.com Oklahoma, September 8, 2026).
What tempers it: Best graded 80.1 over 42 snaps, fifth-best on the offense (SI.com Oklahoma, September 5, 2026); Hinton graded 88.5 overall and 73.5 pass-blocking while Joseph came in at 56.9 and 70.4; Venables said of Fasusi, "He's fine. He's great," and both Maikkula and Fodje were full participants in Monday's September 7 practice, with Venables adding, "We'll get them going this week" (Storm in Norman, September 8, 2026).
Second doubt is the quarterback. John Mateer graded 77.7 on 11-of-17 for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns before being pulled in the third quarter of the 51-0 win, with Isaiah Sategna leading the offense at 90.6 and 215 all-purpose yards including an 88-yard punt-return score (SI.com, September 5, 2026). But Mateer needed hand surgery during 2025, and his completion rate finished at 62.2% with 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as Oklahoma stumbled to the end (CBS Sports, January 8, 2026). The research did not identify which late-season games those were, so that flag rests on the season line alone. Against it: Oklahoma won all four true road games in 2025, 42-3 at Temple, 26-7 at South Carolina, 33-27 at Tennessee and 23-21 at Alabama, ending a 17-game Alabama home winning streak (SoonerSports.com, September 13, 2025).
Third, and the one aimed squarely at 5.5 rather than at the win: Michigan's defense actually graded 82.1 overall, 85.6 against the run and 81.1 in tackling against Western Michigan, with only the pass rush lagging at 70.1 (Yahoo Sports via Maize n Brew, September 7, 2026). Defensive coordinator Jay Hill has the group chasing a specific standard: "If you want to be elite within the country in rush defense, that's where that 85 number comes from," he said during August 2026 fall camp (ClickOnDetroit, August 21, 2026). What To Watch
The depth chart is the live item. Whittingham said on September 7, 2026 that Underwood is the starter, with a caveat: "He's our quarterback right now. It's not something that's infinite. We need to see improvement with a bunch of stuff… it's not just Bryce's job that's set in concrete. Nobody's job is" (CBS Sports). Any practice report that moves off him changes the read on both sides of this number. Michigan is also still ramping bodies: Utah transfer edge John Henry Daley played 51 snaps on a recovering Achilles and, per Whittingham, "He's not at the peak of his game yet"; safety Rod Moore, who had played 85 snaps since the 2023 title game across three knee surgeries, may have gotten more than intended; lineman Andrew Babalola was due back at practice the day after that presser; and tight end Hogan Hansen and edge Carter Meadows were both targeted to return to practice that week (Yahoo Sports, September 7, 2026).
