An old friend returns — and I say friend sincerely, because Tomoyuki Sugano keeps paying for this column's groceries. The trench-coat ERA from last week rolls into Truist carrying 26 homers allowed at 1.92 per nine, a 13% barrel rate allowed, a 7.58 August ERA, and a lefty problem that's grown into a lefty crisis: 2.57 HR/9 against left-handed bats with a .388 wOBA in the split. And here's the part the surface numbers undersell: the EXPECTED stats have had him marked for demolition all season. His xERA has been running roughly two full runs above his actual ERA — sitting near SEVEN at last check — with a .564 expected slug against. The man isn't slumping; he's overdue. August is simply the invoice arriving. The pitch-by-pitch damage report reads like a demolition permit — his cutter's being slugged .741, the four-seam .629, the sinker .557, and only the splitter still earns its paycheck.
Olson, fresh off cashing for this column on Wednesday, brings 37 homers and a .553 slug with 23 bombs against righties into that mess, on a warm, wind-calm Georgia night in a park playing dead neutral. The tradeoff is all in the price: 26 cents is the second-richest ticket we've ever bought, and his average has been quiet the last two weeks even as the power kept ticking. But when the league's most generous active starter meets the NL's premier lefty slugger and Kalshi's +266 still beats every book (best elsewhere: +240), you pay the toll and drive.
Ozzie Albies: 1+ HR (14¢, Effective +574) — Rockies @ Braves
Same game, same friend, second helping — and this one attacks from the side of the plate where Sugano's season is actually bleeding out. Albies switch-hits, which means tonight he steps in LEFT-handed against a righty allowing 2.57 homers per nine to lefty bats with a .388 wOBA in the split — the single most exploitable pitcher-side number on the entire slate. Long-time readers know the Albies playbook: platoon leverage, quality contact right at the launch threshold, and a market that prices the blended season instead of tonight's version of the hitter.
The full disclosure: his power has napped for two weeks (no homers in his last 14 games) and the season line against righties is modest — that's precisely why the ticket costs 14 cents while Olson costs 26. But 20 homers don't happen by accident, the four-seam and cutter Sugano leans on are being slugged .629 and .741, and at +574 — the longest price on tonight's card — we're buying the one bat in this lineup standing exactly where the crack in the wall runs. Two swings at the same generous friend, one from each side of the plate, both below value.
Zach Neto: 1+ HR (17¢, Effective +456) — Phillies @ Angels
Ledger historians will remember Neto fondly: back on the 20th, when a late scratch blew up our card, he stepped in as the emergency replacement at this EXACT price — 17 cents, +456 — and hit one out before the ice in my drink melted. Tonight he gets the friendliest assignment on the slate: Andrew Painter, whose electric arm talent hasn't stopped the rookie tuition payments from piling up — 17 home runs allowed in 92.1 innings, 1.66 per nine, behind a 6.04 ERA. That's the most generous arm pitching anywhere tonight, and Neto gets him at home.
The profile holds up on our filters, too: three straight 20-homer seasons for the young shortstop, a double-digit barrel rate, and a fly-ball rate that's climbed year over year — a right-handed bat that lives in the air against a starter who can't keep anything on the ground in the seats. The honest ledger: Angel Stadium shades pitcher-friendly (0.94), there's no platoon edge in a righty-righty matchup, and the books were thin on Neto numbers when I fired, so I can't flaunt a gap — but at +456, north of the +400 line where this column does its best work, the price only needs Painter to keep being Painter for one pitch. History says he will.
