Chris Sale Has Allowed Two First-Inning Runs In 21 Starts
Sale has thrown 21 first innings and given up two earned runs in them, a 0.86 ERA in the frame against 2.20 for the season. He allows first-inning contact (19 hits, .247) but almost no free bases: two walks and 27 strikeouts, and a .575 OPS in the frame that says the contact isn't hurting him. Brandon Pfaadt matches the shape at 2.45 with two walks in 11 first innings, so 32 first innings between them have produced four walks. Pfaadt draws the easier half, an Atlanta lineup seventh-quietest in baseball at 61 first-inning runs. Sale gets the harder one, Arizona's 63 runs and .776 first-inning OPS, and that's the argument back. The NRFI is the better side here at 2.4%; the YRFI shows 0.4%. First pitch 7:15 PM ET.
Jake Bennett Has Not Allowed A First-Inning Run All Season
Thirteen starts, thirteen first innings, zero runs. Three hits and three walks allowed in the frame all year, a .073 opponent average, 12 strikeouts. That's the bottom of the first, where Pittsburgh's bats are mid-pack at 66 first-inning runs. The top of the first is why this only prices at 0.6%: Bubba Chandler pairs a 4.09 first-inning ERA with 11 walks in 22 first innings, and walks are what beat an NRFI. Boston's own first inning is the fifth-quietest in baseball at 56 runs, which is the counterweight. 6:40 PM ET.
Shane Bieber's First Inning Is A Different Pitcher
The split I keep rereading: an 8.31 first-inning ERA, 10 walks in 8.2 first innings, a 1.003 OPS in the frame, against a 5.48 season ERA. That's an arm that puts traffic on early. Two things complicate it. Gerrit Cole is the reverse on contact (1.93, .128 allowed), though three of the six first-inning hits he's given up left the yard, which is how this side dies without a walk. And Toronto's bats are last in MLB with 44 first-inning runs. Yankees-Blue Jays isn't among Friday's three strongest edges, so I'm reading this one, not playing it. 7:15 PM ET.

Bennett's row stops me every time, 13 starts in without a first-inning run, and his game is still only the board's second-best number. The man throwing the other half of that inning walks people.
How To Use Friday's Board Before First Pitch
The distance between the 2.4% game and the 0.6% game is four walks in 32 first innings against fourteen in 35, eleven of them from one arm. That's the read, and it's why I look at the arms before I look at the first-inning odds screen rather than after.
Two things can still move it. Lineups weren't posted for any of these three when I wrote this, and Arizona's .776 first-inning OPS is a top-of-the-order number a rested bat changes. And Boston-Pittsburgh lives on which arm shows up: a Chandler scratch takes the walks out of the top of the first, and the 0.6% with them.
