At the rate Houston has been giving up yards on the ground, a team would need 235 carries to reach 100.
Houston's two opponents have run 47 times for 20 yards. Oregon State got 26 on 25 carries. Southern lost six on 22. Southern is an FCS team and college box scores count sacks as runs, so that helped Houston's numbers. What isn't noise is the shape of it: through two games, 10 rushing yards a game leads the country.
Both teams are 2-0 and ranked. Texas Tech won the Big 12 last year, made the playoff, and has beaten Houston seven straight times, including 35-11 in Houston last October. This is not an argument that the Cougars are the better team. It's an argument that 7.5 is too many points.
I'm taking Houston plus the points, and I don't hate the outright on the exchanges either.
Nobody Has Run On The Cougars
Austin Armstrong's defense is why Houston is 2-0. Oregon State needed 48 throws to get to 376 yards because it couldn't run at all. Houston sacked the quarterback four times and broke up ten passes. Southern finished with 121 total yards.
The third-down numbers are the ones I keep coming back to. Houston's opponents are 5 of 28, under 18%. Houston's offense is 15 of 21, which was the best rate in the country going into this week. Texas Tech, meanwhile, ranks 112th nationally in third and fourth-down success allowed, at 60%, and that is the seam Houston quarterback Conner Weigman lived in against Oregon State: 20 of 30 for 305 yards.
Tech needed 47 carries in Corvallis to get 155 yards, 3.3 apiece, and gave up four sacks. Will Hammond took more sacks in that one game than he did in all his action last year.
Five Points Have Already Come Off
DraftKings opened this at Texas Tech -12.5, and the week-of number was nearer -9. It's -7.5 now. So far Houston has taken the money and the line keeps trending toward 7.

Both of these teams played Oregon State a week apart, which is the cleanest comparison available in September. Houston got them at home and Tech on the road, and the other two games were against FCS opponents that tell us nothing. It's one data point, but it's a telling one.
The rest of that card lines up with it, and the row that matters most is the receiver. Oregon State's freshman Jesse Legree caught five for 136 against Houston, then eight for 240 against Texas Tech.
Texas Tech is hurt where it can least afford it. The Big 12’s Wednesday availability report has starting cornerback Amier Boyd out, another corner out, and both safeties, Mikal Harrison-Pilot and Oliver Miles III, doubtful. That is the secondary that just gave up 240 yards to one receiver. Leading receiver Kenny Johnson and edge rusher Trey White are questionable.
Nine Straight In Lubbock, Nobody Over 18
Texas Tech has won nine straight at home and held every one of those opponents under 18 points, the longest such run by a Big 12 team since 2002. It's a sellout, and the program's first Friday night home game since 1941.
The defensive front is rebuilt and playing well: 33 pressures in two games, and that's after losing six Red Raiders to the April draft. Houston is down a running back too: Re'Shaun Sanford II, who went for 102 yards and two scores, is out for the season, so the ground game runs through Makhi Hughes and Weigman's legs.
One forecast has Friday night in Lubbock at 17 miles an hour with gusts to 26. The National Weather Service has it nearer 10. If the wind does show up, this turns into a ground game, and the ground is the one thing Houston has not given up.
My Take
Houston actually reminds me of Texas Tech last year, who took their revamped roster straight into the playoffs: 12-2, the program's first outright Big 12 title since 1955, and a No. 4 seed. Weigman provides stability at quarterback, while the Houston defense has elite metrics through two games.
Texas Tech is not quite the team they were last year, and I do think their secondary can be exploited. Tough road games are always a battle, but I think Houston gives them all they can handle here as 7.5-point dogs.
