The Race Behind The Price: Bass vs. Raman
The June 2 primary told you why this market refuses to be a coronation: incumbent Karen Bass took just 34.3% — under 35 for a sitting mayor — with councilmember Nithya Raman at 29.0% and Republican reality-TV figure Spencer Pratt at 25.5% (results). Bass and Raman meet in a Democrat-on-Democrat runoff November 3. The only public head-to-head poll (UC Berkeley IGS/LA Times, May 19–24) actually had Raman ahead 32–28, with a quarter of voters saying "neither" — and no legitimate poll has been released since. The one that circulated in August showing Bass +12 was fabricated: the "Median Strategies" firm admitted on Aug 17–18 it invented the poll as a "social experiment" (The Hill) — after Bass had amplified it in a since-deleted post (TheWrap, Aug 17).
The fire record is the race's engine. Bass was in Ghana when the Palisades fire erupted (Jan 7, 2025); she fired LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley the next month, and Crowley is now suing the city for retaliation and Bass personally for defamation (June 2026) over Bass's debate claim that "1,000 firefighters... were instead sent home on Chief Crowley's watch" — Crowley calls that false; Bass's office calls the suit "meritless" (LAMag). The LA Times reported (Feb 5, 2026) that Bass personally directed the Palisades after-action report be softened; Bass denies it — "muckraking journalism" — and the Times stands by the story. Add the newest number: the 2026 homeless count rose 3.4% (unsheltered +8%), the first increase in two years, and an LA Times analysis found ~41% of her $400M Inside Safe program's participants returned to homelessness — both center stage at the Aug 19 debate (NBC LA).
Raman carries her own baggage, which is why she isn't priced higher than the high 30s: the DSA-linked councilmember (censured by DSA-LA in 2024; in 2026 they issued a "recommendation," not an endorsement) is running against a 3-to-1 money gap ($3.77M vs $1.19M), Newsom and Harris endorsements behind Bass, a police union running "Flip Floppin' Raman" ads, and her viral encampment-buffer quote — "I don't think a kid's gonna be safer if they are 10 feet or 500 feet away from a school" — which opponents answered by staging a fake encampment outside her home. On Aug 13 the council stripped her of her homelessness-committee chairmanship; she calls it payback by Bass allies. And the wild card: Pratt's 218,000 right-leaning primary voters have nowhere natural to go — he refused to endorse anyone, declared "It's war," and claims (without evidence so far) to hold damaging audio of both candidates.
That is what 62¢ is pricing: an incumbent with institutional everything but an approval rating of 32/50, against a challenger who led the last real poll but trails everywhere money and endorsements are counted. If you think the fire record and the homeless count decide low-turnout runoffs, Bass at 62 is rich; if you think Newsom-Harris-money machines don't lose LA runoffs to a DSA-adjacent challenger, it's cheap.

How To Read (And Trade) This Market
Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated prediction market: each outcome trades as a yes/no contract priced 1¢–99¢, and settles at $1.00 if it happens, $0 if it doesn't. The price is the crowd's live probability — an outcome you believe is likelier than its price implies is, in expected-value terms, underpriced. Two practical notes before trading: spreads on longer-dated markets can be wide (check the Bid/Ask column — a big gap means you pay real edge just to enter), and Kalshi charges trading fees that scale with price (how Kalshi fees work).
FAQ
Why do these odds change? They're live market prices — every trade moves them. This page rebuilds automatically through the day, and the Move column shows what shifted.
What does a price in cents mean? Implied probability. A 25¢ yes contract implies roughly a 25% chance; if it settles yes, it pays $1.00.
