Florida State has one game of 2026 tape and it made everybody nervous. SMU has none, and I'm laying the points with the team nobody has seen yet. Kickoff is Monday, September 7, 7:30 p.m. ET at Doak Campbell Stadium on ESPN, the ACC opener for both.
The number first. DraftKings has SMU -3 after opening at -2.5, with a total of 52.5. On Kalshi, the contract that pays if SMU wins by more than 2.5 points is the exchange's version of SMU -2.5. It sits at 52 cents bid and 54 cents ask, and it is the most-traded number in the event at 63,417 contracts. SMU by more than 3.5 is 44 cents.
Florida State Beat New Mexico State And Nobody Felt Better
Florida State beat New Mexico State 34-17 at home on August 29 as a 30.5-point favorite at the close I have, after opening at 28.5, a 13.5-point miss against the spread. The Aggies went 10-of-17 on third down and threw for 272 yards, and Ashton Daniels accounted for 232 yards and two touchdowns in his Florida State debut. Cody Nagel of CBS Sports, who had the number a point higher, put Mike Norvell on his losers list for it: "The coach with the hottest seat in America didn't do much to cool his backside as the Seminoles let the Aggies hang around despite being 31.5-point favorites."
Level-of-competition audit: New Mexico State is not evidence of much, and Florida State did outgain them 419-319. And last year the Seminoles opened by beating Alabama 31-17 and finished 5-7. Early Florida State signal misled people last year, and I'm not sure it isn't doing it again.
What that game did do is put the roster on film: Florida State's 109-player roster carries 62 newcomers, and 26 of them played against New Mexico State, 10 as starters. That cuts both ways, and I'm saying the good version out loud because the bet is the price of not knowing. What scares a -2.5 buyer is variance, and Florida State has it: Micahi Danzy led the country with six 50-yard plays in 2025, and Duce Robinson, a preseason All-American, led the ACC with 1,081 receiving yards. Two explosives from those two make it a one-score game no matter who is better for the other 58 minutes, and Gabe Panikowski, 17-for-17 on college field goals, turns one-score games into coin flips. There is a version of this team that is terrifying by October, and nobody has the tape to rule it out, me included.
SMU Has Not Played, And That Is The Point
Zero 2026 snaps for anybody in a Mustangs uniform, which also means zero snaps for Florida State's staff to prep from. The case is continuity: Kevin Jennings back for a fifth and final year, Rhett Lashlee in year five, same system, against a team that started 10 players in their first game as Seminoles in the opener. SMU is No. 19 in the preseason AP poll.
Continuity is not the same roster, though. SMU lost receivers Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson and running back T.J. Harden. In came Yannick Smith from East Carolina and Jalen Hale from Alabama at receiver, Kendrick Raphael from Cal to replace Harden at running back, and a tight end room rebuilt through the portal, one of them straight out of Florida State's building. So Jennings opens the season throwing to a receiver room he has never opened a season with. And continuity in a game-one spot is a first-quarter edge more than a four-quarter one; Florida State has played a game and SMU hasn't, and that discount is why this is -2.5 at 54 cents and not a bigger number.
The other risk is the throwing hand. Jennings jammed it in fall camp, and Lashlee said he would have "a full two weeks to get ready for game one and be 100 percent." I'm betting he plays like himself.
The 2025 receipts: 9-4, a 35-24 win at Clemson, a 26-20 win over Miami at home, 45 points hung on Boston College. The four losses came by 3, 11, 1 and 3. Nobody blew them out.
The 2.5 On Kalshi Beats The 3 At DraftKings

The row that matters is the 10-cent drop from the 2.5 to the 3.5, which is the market pricing an exactly-three finish. Every Kalshi strike is a half-point, so nothing pushes on the exchange; DraftKings' -3 pushes on a three-point SMU win and the exchange's -2.5 wins it. And exactly three is the most common final margin in college football: across FBS-vs-FBS games from 2023 through 2025, 253 of 2,398 landed on it, 10.55 percent and more than any other number. Ten cents for a 10.55 percent event, the 54-cent ask on the 2.5 against the 44 cents posted on the 3.5, means the exchange has the push band priced at its historical rate; the venue edge here is the fee side, not mispriced push equity.

On The Card: SMU -2.5
SMU wins by more than 2.5 on Kalshi at 53 to 54 cents is the bet. At 55 or 56 I'd rather rest a limit order at 54 and let the market come to me; above that it's a pass, the number is dead and I don't chase it.
The case for the other side, plainly: Robinson and Danzy are the two most explosive players on the field, the kicker has not missed a college field goal, it's a holiday-night home crowd, and 62 newcomers could be a lot better in game two than in game one. How I lose: Doak Campbell on Labor Day night is a real place to play, Robinson and Danzy hit two long ones, Jennings gives it away once to that new receiver room, and Florida State wins a one-score game.
What I'm picturing instead is something like 31-24 SMU, the year-five pairing steadier for four quarters than a group that met this summer. A score scenario, not a certainty, and yes, that's 55 points against a 52.5 total I'm passing on; no lean strong enough to lay anything on it either way.
Short version, if you're in a rush: SMU -2.5 on Kalshi at 53 or 54 cents, nothing above 56, and a book's -2.5 at -115 or better beats it. A buy of year five of the same quarterback and coach, against 62 new faces that could be great or lost and haven't said which yet. Pass the total.
