WNBA Parlay Of The Day (August 8): Howard And Engstler Assist Unders Pay +309
For three weeks this column has been betting one WNBA idea over and over: the market keeps hanging assist lines on players whose teams do not ask them to pass. Thursday that idea cashed both legs of a +245 ticket. Saturday morning's re-price should have closed the gap, and instead the gap grew: a new name took the ticket's top seat at +7.8%, next to the same anchor that just won, and the slip they build grades wider than the one that cashed. Two other things happened on Thursday night that shape this slip: one leg's case was made by a teammate who never appears on the ticket, and one cashed Under got cheaper after it won. Both get explained below, in that order.
The Quick Answer
The WNBA parlay of the day for Saturday, August 8 is a 2-leg Bet365 ticket: Natasha Howard Under 2.5 assists (+135) in Las Vegas Aces at Minnesota Lynx (1:00 PM ET) and Emily Engstler Under 2.5 assists (-135) in Seattle Storm at Portland Fire (8:30 PM ET). The combined price pays +309 against a de-vigged fair value of about +272, a ticket-level edge of roughly +10.1%, wider than the +8.2% Thursday's winning ticket carried. The full 12-row board, the Thursday receipts, and the 1:00 PM deadline that comes with an afternoon leg are all below.
Saturday's Board, Sorted By Edge

The top row is the whole morning in one line: a plus-money assist Under, on an All-Star forward, seventeen cents past its own market's fair price. Five of the twelve rows are assist markets, more than any other stat, which tells you where the books are softest, and the series rules (one leg per game, one book per slip, no same-game packages) turn twelve rows into a two-seat ticket. Two books could legally build one tonight: Bet365 holds seats in both games, and so does DraftKings through Kayla McBride and Carla Leite. Bet365's version stacks +7.8% on +2.1%; DraftKings' stacks +3.9% on +0.5%. Best seats win, and both of Bet365's need a closer look before anything gets fired.
Leg 1: Natasha Howard Under 2.5 Assists (+135)
This series has seen this exact mispricing before, on this exact player. The July 20 card led with Howard Under 3.5 assists at a +5.3% edge, back when Napheesa Collier was out after ankle surgery and the market still wouldn't price Howard as what she is: a frontcourt scorer and rebounder, not a distributor. Since then the situation moved in the Under's favor twice. Collier came back in late July and immediately looked like herself (24 points and 10 rebounds in her return against Seattle), which pulls Minnesota's creation back toward Collier and rookie Olivia Miles, not Howard. And the books cut Howard's line a full assist, from 3.5 to 2.5.
Cut the line, close the gap: that's how it's supposed to work. Instead, Saturday's capture has the Under at +135 against a +118 fair, a +7.8% edge that's wider than the one at 3.5 three weeks ago. The market followed Howard's assist role down but stopped short of where its own de-vigged consensus landed. The honest read on the risk: fair says this leg wins about 46% of the time, an underdog on its own merits. You're not betting that three assists is impossible; you're betting +135 on a 46% proposition, and that gap is the play.
Leg 2: Emily Engstler Under 2.5 Assists (-135)
The anchor seat belongs to the same player who anchored Thursday's winner, and the best argument for it was made by a teammate. Carla Leite put up 27 points and 11 assists in Portland's 97-83 win over Toronto on Thursday — the promised name that never boards this ticket. That's where Fire creation lives. Engstler, in the same game, played 24 minutes and dished 2 assists: under this exact number, in exactly the role Thursday's edition described when it called her a frontcourt piece averaging 2.1 assists in roughly 24 minutes. When the offense runs through Leite's hands, the forward's assist column stays quiet, and the Under stays in character.
The price moved about thirty cents against us since Thursday (-105 then, -135 now) and the edge thinned to +2.1% against a -142 fair. That's still a positive-EV anchor, and the risk is the same one the price is paying for: Portland's rotation news lands late. The Storm-Fire actives won't be final until long after the matinee window closes, so whatever Saturday evening brings is carried risk, not checked risk. The framework from our assists prop guide is doing the real work here — role beats averages, and nothing about Portland's Thursday night suggests the role moved.
The correlation check, leg by leg: nothing connects these games. Different arenas, tips seven and a half hours apart, and Engstler's assist total cannot touch Howard's. Independent legs multiply cleanly, which is the entire reason the series structure insists on one leg per game. A second Minneapolis row would make this a same-game package the books reprice on sight.
The De-Vig Math: +272 Fair, +309 Payout
The worked example, using only the prices above:
- The payout. Convert each price to decimal odds and multiply: 2.35 (Howard at +135) x 1.7407 (Engstler at -135) = 4.0907, a +309 American price. A $100 ticket profits about $309 if both legs cash.
- The fair price. The de-vigged win probabilities are 45.9% (Howard) and 58.7% (Engstler). Independent games multiply straight: the ticket cashes about 26.9% of the time, a fair price near +272.
- The edge. Getting +309 on a +272 proposition compounds the leg edges (+7.8% and +2.1%) into a ticket-level edge around +10.1%, parlay compounding working for you for once, as our expected value calculator guide lays out step by step.
Side by side, the two slips tell the week's story:
| Slip | Legs (both Bet365) | Combined Price | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday, Aug 6 | Wilson U3.5 assists + Engstler U2.5 assists | +245 | Both legs cashed |
| Saturday, Aug 8 | Howard U2.5 assists + Engstler U2.5 assists | +309 | Tips 1:00 & 8:30 PM ET |
Saturday's is longer and wider, and the difference is one seat: Howard's +135 replacing Wilson's old spot upgrades the ticket's biggest edge to +7.8%.
The Parlay Builder is where this gets checked before it gets bet: load both legs, and if the combined price you're actually offered has drifted below the +272 fair, the ticket is a pass. These numbers were captured at 10:37 AM ET Saturday, and the first tip is 1:00 PM ET, so this board has a short shelf life.

The Singles That Couldn't Ride
Here's the repriced winner promised up top: A'ja Wilson Under 3.5 assists. Thursday's edition took it at -130; she finished with exactly 3 assists against Indiana, the Under cashed, and Saturday the same line is +115 — a cashed bet that got cheaper. At a +5.9% edge it's the second-widest number on the board and a real straight bet; it just can't board a slip where Howard already holds the Minneapolis seat. Kayla McBride Under 19.5 points-rebounds-assists at -107 on DraftKings (+3.9%) is the board's best non-Bet365 row and the spine of the only other legal ticket tonight — though pairing it with Carla Leite's +0.5% rebounds row is a slip this column wouldn't fire. Olivia Miles Over 5.5 assists at -120 on Hard Rock (+2.6%) is the only assist Over the screen graded, and there's a tidy symmetry in the market underpricing Miles' passing and overpricing Howard's in the same building — same read, opposite sides. And Bridget Carleton, who grabbed 11 rebounds with zero assists on Thursday, shows up three times in the Portland game, led by her threes Under at +130 (+1.8%).
How To Size It
A 26.9% ticket loses nearly three times in four, so the +309 payout prices to a full-Kelly stake near 3.3% of bankroll, and I take a quarter of that (call it 0.8%) per standard bankroll management. That's a bigger stake than Thursday's slip earned, because the edge is wider, and sizing follows the number in both directions.
- The hard deadline is Saturday's 1:00 PM ET tip in Minneapolis; after that, Howard's leg is gone and the ticket with it.
- Portland's final actives post Saturday evening — that late news is the risk the Engstler price is paying you to hold.
- If Bet365's combined number drifts below the +272 fair, it's a pass, not a smaller bet.

FAQ
Why isn't there a leg from Fever-Sky at 3:30 PM?
Because our capture didn't grade one. Every row it put past fair on Saturday lives in the 1:00 or 8:30 game, and this series doesn't reach into a game without a graded number just to add a leg. Two legs with real edges beat three with a filler.
Why rebet Engstler at a worse price than Thursday?
Because the question is never "is the price worse than it was," it's "is the price still better than fair." At -135 against a -142 fair, it is. If the anchor's edge had flipped negative after Thursday's cash, this edition would have said so and built around it.
Why did a winning Under get cheaper?
Wilson's Under 3.5 cashed Thursday and reprices Saturday at +115: new game, new opponent, a 1:00 PM matinee against the Lynx instead of an evening date in Indiana. The market re-solves every night; this column just checks its answer against the de-vigged fair price and bets the gap when one exists.
The Bottom Line
Saturday's WNBA board put twelve rows past fair, crowded seven of them into an afternoon game in Minneapolis, and left a two-leg Bet365 ticket standing: Howard and Engstler, two assist Unders on players whose teams run their offense through someone else, paying +309 against a +272 fair. The idea hasn't changed in three weeks; the market just keeps re-offering it. Get it in before 1:00 PM ET, check the actives, and size it for the three times in four it misses.
