Will the Giants make the playoffs without Jaxson Dart? Kalshi says 15 cents to buy as of 3:15 PM ET Tuesday, September 22, which means about a 15% chance. It was 47 cents at kickoff Monday night, 30 this morning, and it was cut in half in the hour after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported at 2:37 PM that further testing showed the knee is worse than first thought and that Dart and the Giants "are facing the possibility of season-ending knee surgery." Dart took the hit on his left knee on the Giants' opening drive in Los Angeles and did not come back; Jameis Winston finished a 28-6 loss. Monday night's read was a sprained MCL and two to four weeks. Tuesday afternoon's is a season.
The Read
Here's what I keep coming back to. By Tuesday morning the reporting had settled on the middle outcome, a sprained MCL and two to four weeks of Winston, and that is the version I wrote up at 30 cents. It lasted until 2:37 PM. Schefter's report does not name the ligament or say surgery is decided, and the Giants have announced nothing, but a team does not float "the possibility of season-ending knee surgery" over a Grade 2 sprain. Kalshi's buyers went to 15 in one hour, and 15 cents is a Giants season with Jameis Winston at quarterback for 15 games. Of the three quarterbacks who went down in Week 2, Caleb Williams is climbing back, Jayden Daniels is weeks, and Dart is now the worst of the three. What 15 cents still buys is the schedule: Titans, Cardinals, a Mariota-led Washington and the Saints before Philadelphia. Winston has to win three of those for this contract to have a pulse.

The playoff contract settles after Week 18 ends on January 10. The division contract Tuesday afternoon: Eagles 61 cents, Cowboys 29, Giants 5, Commanders 3. The Giants' division price has gone 27 to 18 to 11 to 5 in 24 hours; the playoff contract only needs a wild card, which is why it is 15 and not 5. Dart's 200-plus passing yards contract was 59 cents at kickoff and settled at zero.
Third-And-Eight On The First Drive
The Giants came in 1-0 after beating Dallas 28-20. Third-and-8 on the opening series, Dart stood in to throw deep, and Rams linebacker Byron Young hit him from the right side and drove him into Josaiah Stewart, who undercut his legs. The left knee bent the wrong way in the air. He was 3 of 5 for 20 yards.
The Giants ruled him out early in the third quarter, down 14-3. Joe Schoen's "he's going to be OK," to ESPN's Laura Rutledge at halftime, came while Dart was still being X-rayed, and after the game Harbaugh said a sprained MCL was "in the neighborhood of it." Overnight, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported the sprain and negative X-rays; Connor Hughes reported the team was bracing for two to four weeks. Then came Tuesday's testing, and Schefter's report at 2:37 PM that the knee is worse than initially thought and season-ending surgery is on the table. No ligament has been named, no surgery announced, no timetable.
Kalshi went to work Monday anyway: 47 cents at kickoff, 34 by halftime, 22 in the third quarter, back to 29 by the end. Tuesday it held 30 all morning, then 15 by 3 PM.
What You Get With Winston
Jameis Winston is 32 and this is his second year as the Giants' backup. He started two games last November when Dart sat and lost both, 27-20 to Green Bay and 34-27 in Detroit, with 567 yards, two touchdowns and two picks across three appearances. Monday night he came in cold and finished 11 of 27 for 111 yards and an interception.
What he's replacing is a quarterback who ran for 487 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie, then opened this year with three touchdown passes against Dallas. Dart's legs are the Giants' offense, and that is what the market priced out.
The Schedule While He's Out
Four games before the Giants see Philadelphia, and Winston is the quarterback for all of them now, and probably the twelve after.

Tennessee, Arizona, Washington with Marcus Mariota in for Jayden Daniels, and New Orleans. A healthy Dart probably goes 3-1 through it. Winston against that group is two wins, maybe three, and after that the schedule stops being soft. Fifteen games of a backup on a team whose offense was built on the starter's legs is what 15 cents prices.
This is the third starting quarterback to go down in eight days. Caleb Williams' hamstring cost Chicago 14 cents on the same contract, Daniels' elbow cost Washington 15, and Dart's knee has now cost New York 32. The Bears and Commanders came out of their MRIs with a timetable. The Giants came out of theirs with a second cut bigger than the first.
What Moves The Price From Here
- The surgery decision. Schefter's report says surgery is a possibility; the Giants have yet to decide. An announced surgery costs the contract a few more cents and sends the division contract to the floor. Rehab and a November return makes 15 too low, and the buyers will show up before the press release finishes.
- Titans at Giants, Sunday. The Giants were 72 cents to win at kickoff Monday and 58 now. A Winston win against Tennessee keeps a 15-cent contract breathing; a loss makes them 1-2 with a backup and the price goes single digits.
- Wednesday's practice report and injured reserve. An IR designation is four games minimum; the absence of one, after this report, would be the first good sign in 24 hours.
- January 10, 2027. The field is set and the contract settles.
Bottom Line
15 cents says about a 15% chance the Giants make the playoffs. The same roster was 47 cents at kickoff Monday and 30 at breakfast Tuesday, and the afternoon's testing took the middle outcome off the table. Until the Giants say the word surgery, there is a version where Dart rehabs and 15 is cheap. The market is not waiting for the press conference, and after two cuts in 24 hours I would not either. Winston against the Titans on Sunday is the first thing that can move it back up.
