The Quick Answer
Kalshi has turned the 2026 NFL Comeback Player of the Year race into a 16-way market, and the crowd has made Patrick Mahomes the clear favorite after his season-ending knee injury last December. We put the whole field to our AI model panel, price-blind, scoring every player without letting the models see a single market number. The panel agrees Mahomes belongs on top, but by a smaller margin than the market, and it lands far off the crowd on one name in particular: Indianapolis quarterback Daniel Jones, whom the models rate more than twice as likely to win as his price implies. The full board, every model's number, and where they split hardest from the market are below.

Every Seat's Number
The full price-blind board. Five of the panel's eight seats scored this market; each number is that model's own estimate that the player wins, after a revision round where every model read the others' anonymized reasoning. "Edge" is the blend minus the market price: positive means the panel thinks the market is too low.

The Setup: A QB Award, Now With A Rulebook
Two facts shape this whole board before a single 2026 snap is played.
The first is history. Quarterbacks win this award. Seven of the last nine winners played the position: Andrew Luck, Ryan Tannehill, Alex Smith, Joe Burrow twice, Joe Flacco, and Geno Smith. The only exceptions are Keenan Allen in 2017 and running back Christian McCaffrey, who took the 2025 award after a lost, injury-wrecked prior season. Voters reward a marquee passer who returns from injury and drags a team back into contention. That base rate is why four of the panel's five highest numbers belong to quarterbacks, with receiver Malik Nabers the lone exception in the top tier.
The second is a rule change most casual fans missed. In June 2024 the AP tightened the criteria. Per AP senior NFL writer Rob Maaddi, the award now honors a player "overcoming illness, physical injury, or other circumstances that led him to miss playing time the previous season." Bouncing back from a benching or a slump no longer counts. That single sentence reshapes the field: it rewards the long list of stars who tore something in 2025, and it quietly buries a name like Kirk Cousins, whose 2026 story is winning back a starting job in Las Vegas after a healthy year on the Atlanta bench. No missed time, no real case. The panel priced him at a rounding error, and the rulebook is why.
Patrick Mahomes fits the template almost too perfectly. He tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee on December 14, 2025, ending a season in which Kansas City collapsed to 6-11 and missed the playoffs. A superstar quarterback, a first career season-ender, a proud team primed to rebound, and a reported track to the Week 1 opener against Denver: it is the exact profile voters have rewarded for a decade, and NFL.com already tags him its No. 1 contender. The market has him at 36¢, and the panel does not disagree that he is the favorite. It simply thinks 36¢ is a touch rich for a player returning from a December knee reconstruction on a nine-month clock, where a slow September or another mediocre Chiefs year hands the narrative to someone else.
Where The Panel Sees Value
The clearest gap on the board is Daniel Jones. The market prices the Colts quarterback at 7¢; the panel blends him at 18%, its second-highest number and an 11-point edge. The logic is consistent across all five seats: Jones was in the middle of a legitimately strong first season in Indianapolis when he tore his right Achilles in Week 14, he declared himself fully cleared for training camp in July, and Colts coach Shane Steichen named him the unquestioned starter. That is the cleanest version of the voters' favorite story, an interrupted good season rather than a reclamation project, and NFL.com ranks him its No. 2 contender. If the models are right, the market is treating a top-two candidate like a mid-board longshot.
Joe Burrow is the panel's other consensus overlay, blended at 7% against a 2¢ price. Burrow has already won this award twice, he is healthy and full-go in camp after turf-toe surgery cut his 2025 short, and a two-time winner on a bounce-back Bengals team is exactly the kind of name that gathers late-season votes if Cincinnati wins. The counter is real: he missed fewer games than the true season-enders, which can read as a weaker "comeback" to voters. But at 2¢, the panel thinks the market has rounded him almost to zero, and it will not.
Dark Horses The Panel Won't Dismiss
The field runs deep, and a few sub-5% names drew real numbers rather than token tails.
- Michael Penix Jr. (blend 4%, market under 1¢): a legitimate torn-ACL return, but the cloud is heavy. As of mid-August he was not yet cleared for full team drills and faces an open competition with Tua Tagovailoa for the starting job. DeepSeek gave him the panel's high mark at 5%, betting the talent wins the job; Sonnet's 2% reflects the risk he never starts.
- Nick Bosa (blend 4%, market 2¢): elite pass rusher back from a torn ACL, and the panel nudged him above his price. The headwind is the position, no pure edge rusher has won this award in the modern window, so even a dominant year fights the voters' quarterback reflex.
- Tucker Kraft (blend 4%, market 4¢): the one non-QB where market and panel shake hands. He was the league's most productive tight end before a Week 9 ACL tear, and a healthy return to that form is a real, if narrow, path.
Where The Panel Changed Its Mind
The models scored the board once, then read each other's anonymized reasoning and scored it again. The revision round tightened the top and firmed the edge:
- The panel's read on Daniel Jones hardened. After seeing peers make the same argument, the seats converged upward on him, from a first-pass spread that topped out near 17% to a second-pass cluster of 17 to 19 across every model. A gap that could have been one model's outlier became the board's most durable disagreement with the market.
- One seat lifted Joe Burrow from a near-dismissal to a real number, moving him up several points once other forecasters flagged his two prior wins and clean health. Its closing rationale: "the AP's QB-heavy voting bias and clarified injury criteria" both point the same direction. — DeepSeek
- The Mahomes call held, but every seat attached the same caveat. As Opus put it, keeping him on top while naming the risk: "a December ACL leaves nine months; if Mahomes starts slow or KC stays mediocre, Daniel Jones's cleaner Achilles-return-as-unquestioned-QB1 on a stronger Colts roster wins the arc." — Opus
What Would Change The Panel's Mind
This is a preseason read on a February award, so it will move. The event-shaped triggers to watch:
- A Mahomes Week 1 Ruling. Confirmation that he starts the opener against Denver, versus a PUP stint or a September setback, is the single biggest swing on the board. Cleared and playing pushes his number up; any delay pushes it toward Jones and Burrow.
- The Penix Job. If Atlanta names Michael Penix Jr. the Week 1 starter over Tua Tagovailoa, his 4% is light. If Tagovailoa wins the job, Penix's contract is close to dead for 2026.
- Team Records Through October. This award follows winning. A 5-1 Chiefs or Colts start turns its returning quarterback into the front-runner; a losing start quietly ends a candidacy no matter how the player looks.
- Any Re-Injury Or Setback News. Every name here is a health story first. A tweak in September for Nabers, Bosa, Dell, or Warner removes them from the board faster than any stat line.

The Bottom Line
The market and the panel agree on the shape of this race: Patrick Mahomes is the favorite, and it is a quarterback's award decided by which returning passer leads the best late-season team. Where they part ways is the price of that favorite and the value beneath him. The models fade Mahomes from 36¢ to 32% on nine-month-knee risk, and they hammer the table on Daniel Jones, an 18% read on a 7¢ contract, arguing the cleanest injury-return story on the board is being priced like a longshot. Whether that edge cashes comes down to knees, jobs, and standings between now and February. We will re-score it in public as each one resolves.
