The Read
New Orleans, with the touchdown. As of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, Kalshi has Detroit at 73 to 75 cents to win and the Saints at 26 to 27; DraftKings has the Lions -7 with a 50.5 total, and FanDuel has 6.5 with 49.5. Detroit is laying exactly 7 against a Saints defense that allowed 4.98 yards a play last year (6th) and a 34.9% third-down rate (4th), attached to an offense that scored 18 a game (28th); that combination keeps games close and low. My pick is Saints +7, and the better version of it is on Kalshi: "no" on "Detroit wins by over 7.5" at 55 cents, which wins on a 7-point Lions win where the book only refunds you. The second bet is the total: under 49.5, on Kalshi as "no" on "over 49.5" at 49 cents.

Where the money is. At DraftKings, as of September 8, 82% of the spread bets and 86% of the money are on Detroit -7, and the moneyline runs 94% and 92% Lions. The total is the lopsided one: 51% of the bets but 79% of the money on the over.
What The Market Is Weighing
Detroit is on its third play-caller in three seasons. Ben Johnson left for Chicago; John Morton lasted one year and was fired after a 9-8 season; Drew Petzing, the former Cardinals coordinator, calls the plays now, his first game with Jared Goff. The offense he inherits scored 28.3 a game (5th), averaged 6.05 yards a play (4th) and produced 4.71 plays of 20-plus yards a game (3rd). Kelvin Sheppard's defense, in year two, generated 49 sacks (4th) and got home on 8.0% of dropbacks (7th), but allowed 24.3 points (22nd) and 4.0 plays of 20-plus a game (26th). Goff was pressured on 24.2% of his dropbacks last year and sacked 38 times. Sam LaPorta's hip flared up in camp and he's been practicing since August 25; Isiah Pacheco, signed to back up Jahmyr Gibbs, went on injured reserve with a back injury on cut-down day; D.J. Reed's groin isn't expected to cost him the opener.
New Orleans has a quarterback it picked, and it's missing the receiver it drafted for him. Tyler Shough took the job from Spencer Rattler in Week 8 last year and is the starter in Kellen Moore's second season; he was sacked 31 times in 11 games. The Saints signed Travis Etienne Jr. and drafted Jordyn Tyson in the first round to be Shough's lead receiver; Tyson is on injured reserve with a hamstring. Alvin Kamara sprained an MCL in the August 18 joint practice with a month-plus timetable; Kellen Moore hasn't ruled out Kamara or Cameron Jordan. The defense is the part that travels: 4.98 yards a play allowed (6th), 196.2 passing yards (5th), a 34.9% third-down rate (4th), a sack on 8.5% of dropbacks (5th), and 19.4 points allowed at home against 25.3 on the road; Jordan's status is the one that touches those numbers. The offense is the problem: 18.0 points a game (28th), 5.02 yards a play (27th), 3.77 a carry (31st) and 2.24 plays of 20-plus a game, fewest in the league. New Orleans went 6-11 and 9-8 against the spread.
The number has been 7 since May and the money hasn't moved it. DraftKings opened Detroit -7 and it's still -7 with 87% of the money on the Lions; the moneyline eased from -325 to -310 and the total climbed from 48.5 to 49.5, and DraftKings is at 50.5 this week. On Kalshi, "Detroit by 7 or more" at 53-54 cents against "by 8 or more" at 45-47 puts an eight-cent price on the number 7 alone.

The Pick
Laying the 7 has an honest case. Detroit's offense was top-five in points and yards per play, at home, against a quarterback in his first full season as a starter who lost his first-round receiver before the opener and was sacked once every 12 dropbacks.
But the Saints' defense was top-six by yards per play and top-five against the pass, and it gets a quarterback in Goff who was pressured on 24.2% of his dropbacks, 25th-best protection in the league. Put Detroit's 28.3 against a defense that allowed 22.5 and you get about 25; put New Orleans's 18 against a defense that allowed 24.3 and you get about 21. That's a four-point game on the season numbers, six with the home field, and the book wants seven. The Saints can't score, which is why I'm nowhere near the moneyline, but their defense can keep this inside a touchdown.
Saints +7, -112 at DraftKings, or better, "no" on "Detroit wins by over 7.5" on Kalshi at 55 cents. The Kalshi contract pays on a 7-point Detroit win; the sportsbook bet pushes there.
Under 49.5, and on Kalshi it's "no" on "over 49.5" at 49 cents. DraftKings has moved its total to 50.5. New Orleans produced 2.24 plays of 20-plus yards a game, fewest in the league, and allowed 4.98 a play; the season numbers put this game at about 46, and 79% of the DraftKings money has pushed the total from 48.5 to 49.5, and to 50.5 there, the other way. If Jordan is ruled out, the Saints' pass defense loses its best rusher.
What Would Change The Picture
Wednesday's report is the first official one. Sam LaPorta (hip) is uncertain and Dan Campbell won't say yet; Alvin Kamara (Grade 2 MCL sprain) has not practiced since August 18 and is listed questionable; Cam Jordan (hamstring) has not been ruled out or cleared by Kellen Moore. Jordan out takes the Saints' best rusher off the field, and Kamara out takes their lead back.
Bottom Line
The season numbers make this a six-point game with about 46 points in it, and the market has it at seven and 49.5. I'll take the Saints and the 7 on Kalshi, where the 7 wins, and the under at 49.5.
This one settles Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the final score.
