The Read
Chicago, and the number is the reason. As of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, Kalshi has the Bears at 59 to 60 cents to win in Charlotte and the Panthers at 40 to 41; the books crossed to Chicago -3 this week, Kalshi still sells "Chicago wins by over 2.5" at 55 cents, and the total is 47.5. Carolina opens without either starting tackle, and the market spent a summer unable to push this number past 2.5 before it finally crossed. My pick is "Chicago wins by over 2.5" on Kalshi at 55 cents, and Bears -3 at the book if you'd rather.

Where the money is. At DraftKings, as of September 8, 86% of the spread bets and 88% of the money are on Chicago -3. The total is the lopsided one: 42% of the bets but 91% of the money is on the over.
What The Market Is Weighing
Carolina's tackles are out until October, minimum. On cut-down day the Panthers put left tackle Ikem Ekwonu, who tore his patellar tendon in January's wild-card loss, on reserve/PUP, and right tackle Taylor Moton, diagnosed with blood clots in his lung, on reserve/non-football illness; both lists mean at least four games out. Defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton (neck surgery) went to PUP the same day. The Week 1 line has three new starters: Rasheed Walker, signed from Green Bay, at left tackle, and rookie first-round pick Monroe Freeling at right tackle, a side he never played in 18 starts at Georgia. Bryce Young took 29 sacks last year behind Ekwonu and Moton.
Chicago's front is mostly the one that got here. The Bears generated 39 sacks last season, and the top of that group is back: Montez Sweat, who led the team in sacks for a third straight year with 10, and Austin Booker. What changed is the interior: Gervon Dexter Sr., a 33-game starter, was traded to Atlanta on cut-down weekend, and Marcus Davenport was released to the practice squad. The rush is thinner inside than a year ago and the same on the edges, and the edges are what a rookie tackle has to handle. The honest number on Chicago's defense is worse than the sack total: 6.03 yards a play allowed (29th), 134.8 rushing yards (27th), 4.35 plays of 20-plus yards a game (30th). It survived on takeaways, 1.94 a game, most in the league, and that's the kind of number that doesn't repeat. The strength is the other side of the ball: 145.4 rushing yards a game (3rd), 4.98 a carry (3rd), 0.65 turnovers a game (fewest in football), and Williams sacked on 4.0% of dropbacks, third-best protection in the league.
The line is frozen while the money moves. DraftKings opened Bears -2.5 with a 44.5 total in May. The spread crossed to 3 this week, DraftKings included; the total climbed three points, the Chicago moneyline went from -135 to -155, and the price on Carolina +2.5 drifted from -110 to -102, the book paying a little more to anyone who'll take the home team. Carolina went 11-7 against the spread last year and won the NFC South at 8-9; Young is in the final year of his rookie deal off his first 3,000-yard, 20-touchdown season, on an offense that scored 18.3 a game (27th) and threw for 194.5 (27th). Carolina's defense allowed a 47.6% third-down conversion rate, worst in the league, produced 30 sacks (30th) and hit the quarterback on 9.9% of dropbacks, 31st.

The Pick
Carolina's argument gets the floor first, because it's real. The Bears allowed 18.8 points a game at home last season and 30.4 on the road, and this is a road game. Carolina covered 11 of 18, and a Bears defense that gave up 6 yards a play and lived on turnovers is the kind of unit a home dog scores on. The market has known about these tackles for weeks and took until this week to push this number to 3; part of the answer is that money keeps showing up on the home team.
But the simplest version of this game is a quarterback who took 29 sacks behind a healthy line now standing behind a free-agent left tackle and a rookie on the wrong side, against the edge pair that produced most of a 39-sack season. Chicago's offense converted 42.5% of third downs (8th) against a defense that allowed 47.6%, worst in the league, and it protects the quarterback better than almost anyone against a front that got to the passer less than almost anyone. Chicago has won five of the last six meetings, the last one 36-10. And Kalshi still sells the 2.5: the favorite inside a field goal at 55 cents, which is -122 in book terms, twenty cents for a push on 3 that lands about one game in ten.
"Chicago wins by over 2.5" on Kalshi at 55 cents, or Bears -3, -102 at DraftKings. The tackles are the whole thesis, and reserve rules keep them out until October, so the thesis holds through kickoff.
On the total, I lean under 47.5 and I'm not betting it. The three points this number climbed were camp points, 91% of the DraftKings money is already on the over, and "over 47.5" trades at 46-47 cents on Kalshi; I'm not paying to win a coin flip.
What Would Change The Picture
Wednesday's report is the first official one. Dave Canales expects Chuba Hubbard (hamstring) to be ready; Xavier Legette (foot) was in a boot into last week; Jaelan Phillips (arm) sat the preseason finale; Derrick Brown's knee has no public update. Luther Burden: Ben Johnson said he "looks 100% to me" on August 30, and with DJ Moore traded to Buffalo, Burden and Rome Odunze are the receiver room.

Bottom Line
A division champion opens at home with two new tackles in front of a quarterback who took 29 sacks behind the old ones, against an offense that converts third downs on a defense that can't stop them, and Kalshi still sells the favorite inside a field goal. Take the 55-cent contract, or the Bears at 3 at the book.
This one settles Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the final score.
