Where the money is. Across the books whose handles ScoresAndOdds tracks, 55% of the spread bets and 70% of the money were on Philadelphia -4.5 as of September 7; at DraftKings on September 8, 68% of the spread bets and 96% of the money are on the Eagles at -5.5, and 88% of the total money is on the under. The spread went from 5.5 to 4.5, and DraftKings has moved back to 5.5 this week; the total went from 44.5 to 46.5 and back to 44.5.
What The Market Is Weighing
Philadelphia's pass defense was the outlier of last season, and the people who built it are back. The Eagles allowed a 57.4% completion rate, the lowest in the league, 0.82 passing touchdowns a game, the fewest, and a 29.2% completion rate on throws of 20-plus air yards, fourth-lowest. Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo and Zack Baun return under Vic Fangio in his third season, and Riq Woolen was signed as the third corner. Reed Blankenship, Nakobe Dean and Jaelan Phillips left, but the corners and the interior line are the unit that produced the completion number, and Jonathan Greenard is on the roster off the physically-unable-to-perform list even if Fangio won't promise him for Sunday.
Washington's quarterback is back. His blind side, his center and his play-caller are new. Jayden Daniels played seven games last year around a knee, a hamstring and a dislocated elbow, and in them he completed 61.0% of his throws for 180.6 yards a game with a completion rate over expectation of -2.7, meaning he completed fewer passes than the difficulty of his throws predicted. He carries no designation this week; Dan Quinn says the change is in the decisions, "a throw out of bounds is the right call." Around him: Laremy Tunsil tore a triceps in August and is out most of the season, so Brandon Coleman plays left tackle; Nick Allegretti missed camp with a calf strain and returned to practice this week; and David Blough is calling plays for the first time, moving Washington under center and to play-action after two years of Kliff Kingsbury's no-huddle, which ran on 61.7% of the Commanders' snaps. That line meets Carter and a defense that hit quarterbacks on 15.2% of dropbacks, eighth-most.
Washington's defense was the second-worst in football last year, and that number is a mirage in both directions. The Commanders allowed 0.155 EPA per play, expected points added per play, the second-most in the league, and 8.23 yards per pass attempt, also second-most. Then they rebuilt it: Daronte Jones is the new coordinator, Oweh signed for $96 million, Chaisson, Settle, Robertson and Chenal came in free agency, and Sonny Styles was the seventh pick. So last year's ranks are not the argument; Sunday's lineup is. Oweh has a calf strain and Quinn will not commit to him until he practices, Chaisson just came back from a knee, Dorance Armstrong is suspended for the opener, and Jer'Zhan Newton is on injured reserve, so the edges are the rookie Joshua Josephs, Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Charles Omenihu. Jalen Hurts was hit on 9.4% of his dropbacks last year, the second-lowest rate in the league, and his passer rating from a clean pocket was 110.8, better than three-quarters of starters, behind five linemen who are all back. Sean Mannion has never called a play and A.J. Brown is in New England, but the pocket does not need a play-caller.

The Pick
The market has already voted once against this. The number came down from 5.5 to 4.5 with 70% of the money on Philadelphia, and lines that move against the public move on someone's bigger bets. Washington went 12-5 with a healthy Daniels in 2024, and two first-time play-callers on one field widen the range of outcomes.
But the facts that decide this game are the durable ones: Philadelphia's coverage with the same corners, Philadelphia's pocket with the same five linemen, and Washington's answer, Daniels, behind a new left tackle for a play-caller who has never called a play.
Eagles -4.5, -115 at FanDuel, or "Philadelphia wins by over 4.5" on Kalshi at 51 cents. DraftKings has moved to 5.5.
The total is a pass: Philadelphia's touchdown numbers say under, and the market already took it from 46.5 back to 44.5.
