The part the news sites could not show you is that the market made most of this move a day before anyone stepped to a podium. Sanders was the favorite at 62¢ on Sunday morning. By 9 AM Monday Watson was at 79¢, and the announcement was worth only the final leg.

Start with the row that aged worst, because I wrote it. Sunday morning's edition of this page read Watson's narrowing spread as the sellers winning the argument. That reading lasted about five hours. On Sunday afternoon, with no announcement anywhere, Watson ran to 66¢ and Sanders fell to 33¢ on the heaviest pre-announcement hour of the whole window.
The trigger was a coach's comment. Watson had been booed at home during Saturday's 31-7 loss to the Bills, his first Cleveland appearance since tearing his Achilles in 2024, and afterward he called the booing "a disrespectful thing" that "has nothing to do about the performance." On Sunday Monken told reporters those comments would not affect the quarterback decision. A coach who publicly insulates his veteran the day after a 5-for-12 outing is not preparing to bench him, and Sunday's buyers traded on exactly that.
Watson reached 79¢ in the hour ending 9 AM Monday, and the announcement pushed him to 99¢ within the next hour. Of the roughly 56 cents he gained between Sunday morning and Monday evening, about 40 were in the price before the news was public.
The announcement was the confirmation leg. The price history in one sentence: the two names traded roughly 527,000 contracts combined in the 24 hours ending Monday evening, and by Friday that frenzy had burned off to a few thousand a day.
What Monken Said
Monken did not leave room for interpretation. "Deshaun is going to start against Jacksonville," he said, adding that he "took in the full body of work over the course of offseason to training camp to the games, the joint practice, and ultimately felt like to start the season on the road Deshaun gave us the best chance to move the ball and score points."
Two more lines matter for this board. On durability: "I don't anticipate the question of starting quarterback being a week-to-week issue." On timing: "I felt that way going into last game but wasn't sure, and after we talked as a staff and after we relooked at everything, we're gonna go that direction." The decision was mostly made before the weekend, which is what the Sunday order flow said. He closed with a nod to the loser of the competition: "I think Shedeur has done a great job, come a long ways and we are excited about his future."
Why Sanders Still Costs A Few Cents
As of August 28, Sanders was 3¢ bid / 4¢ ask. Kalshi's rule says the market "will close and expire early if the official depth chart is released," and short of that it runs to the Week 1 game itself. Monday's announcement is not the settlement trigger, and the window between the podium and the paperwork is what those cents price.
Two small risks live in that window. Health first: Watson's start at Jacksonville would be his first regular-season game since October 2024, nearly two years after his Achilles tear. Reversal second, and Monken priced that one down himself; "not a week-to-week issue" is a coach telling you the decision is meant to survive a bad practice.
Most of the residual is not a considered bet on Sanders. Roughly 225,000 Sanders contracts traded after the news broke, at a few cents apiece, and flow like that on a decided market is mostly pre-announcement holders getting out and longshot buyers paying pennies for the chaos scenario. The other nine names, from Dillon Gabriel down to eight players not on Cleveland's roster, show a zero bid against a penny ask. A dead contract posts a floor, which is why a settled board's asks always add up past a dollar. None of this is a recommendation on any contract here.
Week 1 At Jacksonville
The decision feeds straight into the game this market settles on. As of August 28, Kalshi priced Jacksonville at 77¢ bid and Cleveland at 21¢ bid to win the September 13 opener. That is a road date where the Browns are clear underdogs and where the quarterback question was the biggest variable on the Cleveland side.

The Bottom Line
On August 16 this page carried Watson at 86¢ and called the competition all but over. A week later it carried Sanders at 62¢ and said the same thing the other way. Both were honest readings, and the lesson is that an August quarterback price is only as solid as the most recent audition. As of August 28 the contract was still open, waiting on one document, the official depth chart that closes it early, and one date, September 13 at Jacksonville, where the price stops being about who starts and becomes about what he does.
