What One Road Win Did To The Ladder
Cleveland was one of three teams in Week 2 to win a game the season market expected it to lose; the other 13 went to the higher-projected team. The price to win at Tampa Bay had been 21¢ bid, 22¢ ask. Tampa Bay's ladder did not move on the loss and still carries 7.1 expected wins; Cleveland's went to 5.9 on Tuesday's board and 6.0 on Wednesday's.
The rung that moved most was five wins, up twenty cents from a 47.5¢ midpoint to 67.5¢, and its quote narrowed from seven cents wide to one cent. Six wins went from 39¢ to 53.5¢. The whole ladder now crosses 50 cents at 6.22 wins.
Week 1 read as roster rot: 24-0 at halftime, 1-for-8 on third down, five sacks of Deshaun Watson in his first regular-season game in 693 days, per the AP recap, on a roster with a new head coach in Monken, Myles Garrett traded to the Rams for Jared Verse and three picks, and a rebuilt line. History said one blowout was worth less than that. The 38 team-seasons since 2011 that came off a losing year and then lost Week 1 by 14 or more reached five wins 63% of the time, six wins 58% and eight wins 16%. The market now sits above that history on five and eight wins and four and a half points under it on six.

The panel's argument for staying low was the roster, not the result: Garrett in Los Angeles, Schwartz gone, an unsettled quarterback room. Claude Sonnet held and named the trap on both sides of the panel: "Both over-read a single data point in opposite directions." The market has now over-read two data points in opposite directions inside nine days, trading the six-win contract at 39¢ and 53.5¢ on the way. Week 3: Carolina At Cleveland
The Panthers visit Huntington Bank Field on Sunday, September 27, at 1:00 p.m. ET, and Cleveland is the underdog at home: 41¢ bid, 42¢ ask to win, with Carolina at 58¢ bid, 59¢ ask. Carolina to win by more than 2.5 points sits at 52¢ bid, 53¢ ask; Cleveland to win by more than 1.5 is 39¢ bid, 40¢ ask. On the total, the 42.5 rung is the coin flip, with the over at 48¢ bid, 49¢ ask.
At 1-1 with 15 games left, six wins needs five more. Win Sunday and it needs four of the last 14, and the six-win contract climbs from here. Lose and it needs five of 14 with Pittsburgh on a short week next, and the rung goes back toward the 47¢ to 53¢ band it held before the season. Last week a Cleveland win was priced at 22¢ and it came; this week it is 41.5¢, so a win moves the ladder less and a loss moves it more.
What Moves The Ladder Next
- The pass protection. Five sacks behind a line rebuilt with $73.5 million in free-agent deals and the ninth overall pick was the Week 1 problem every seat raised. A month of that moves every rung from five up.
- Thursday, October 1 against Pittsburgh. Last year's defense had 53 sacks, 23 of them Garrett's; Verse had 7.5 with the Rams. If the new front gets home on a short week, the gloomier half of the panel loses its main argument.
- October 11 at the Jets and October 25 at Tennessee. Two of the four soft games every seat named arrive inside six weeks. Sweep them and six wins is the season every seat described; split them and the hard end, Houston, Pittsburgh twice and Baltimore twice, still has to produce a win.
