Josh Allen threw eight passes of 20 or more yards in the air on Sunday against the defense that finished first in the NFL last season. Four of them landed, for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Houston's coach put the loss on his own defense afterward, and he was right to. That is the game everyone is looking at this week, and it is why 77% of the spread tickets on DraftKings and 81% of the money are on Buffalo laying 4.5 points to Detroit on Thursday night.
I understand it. I love Buffalo this season and I love Allen in the MVP race. I still think the crowd is looking at the wrong game. If you just want the pick, it is at the bottom.

The number opened at 4.5 the day the schedule came out and has not moved. What has moved is the money: 77% of DraftKings' spread tickets and 81% of the handle are on the Bills, and the over is drawing 75% of tickets and 86% of the money at 53.5. On Kalshi, Buffalo covering the book's number is a coin flip, 51 to 52 cents, which is where a -112 price lands once the vig comes out. Nobody is getting paid extra to fade the crowd here. The crowd is just very sure.

Detroit Led 21-0 And Needed Overtime
Detroit beat New Orleans 31-30 on Sunday, and the score is generous to Detroit. The Lions led 21-0. Up 24-17 with 2:32 left, Dan Campbell kicked a field goal from the 1-yard line instead of going for the touchdown that ends the game, and Tyler Shough answered with the tying drive. In overtime, Kellen Moore went for two to win it and the throw was knocked away. Earlier, a Goff fumble that New Orleans scooped and scored was overturned on replay because his arm was judged to be moving forward. You can read the rulebook on that one. Everyone watching saw a fumble.
Strip the drama out and the numbers say the same thing. Jahmyr Gibbs carried 29 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns, and Detroit had seven runs of 10 or more yards, but Jared Goff averaged 5.3 yards a throw on 39 attempts and took eight hits. The defense gave up six completions of 20 or more yards to Shough, who finished with 410 passing yards, and four of them went to Chris Olave, 10 catches for 182. Detroit sent five or more rushers on 43% of his dropbacks and got five sacks, so the pass rush was feast or famine, and the secondary was famine.
Brian Branch, the best player in that secondary, is still on the physically-unable-to-perform list after Achilles surgery. Christian Izien is out with a groin. That is the group that has to play Allen four days after it played Shough.
Allen Went Over The Top, And Buffalo's Defense Did Not Stop Anyone Either
Buffalo won 36-31 in Houston, and Allen was the whole thing: 20 of 30 for 334 yards, 12.8 yards of depth per throw, four of eight on shots of 20-plus air yards for 155 yards and both touchdowns. Dalton Kincaid caught five for 130 with grabs of 38, 40 and 35 yards. DJ Moore went five for 100 in his Buffalo debut. James Cook carried 13 times. Buffalo did not need him.
Here is the part the 81% is skipping. C.J. Stroud, outside of two turnovers, played an efficient game against this Buffalo defense: 274 yards, two touchdowns, four completions of 20 or more. Buffalo sent extra rushers on 29% of his dropbacks for three sacks and nine hits, and still gave up 31 points at home. The run defense was the real strength, holding David Montgomery and company to 3.9 yards a carry and stuffing a quarter of Houston's runs. Up front, T.J. Sanders is already out and Terrel Bernard is questionable with a calf.
I am not buying the Buffalo secondary as the unit it was last season. Stroud tested it and passed. Goff, with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, gets it next.
Four Days For Both Of Them
Thursday night is a short week for two teams that each played a draining game on Sunday, and Detroit does it on the road. That usually argues for the favorite. It also argues against 53.5, the highest total of the week, on a night when two offenses install a game plan in three practices.
The Gibbs matchup is the one I keep coming back to. Buffalo stopped Houston's run game, and people are treating that as settled. Gibbs just handled 29 carries at five yards a pop and broke seven of them for double digits, and Detroit ran the ball on 55% of its neutral-situation snaps, which is how you keep Allen on the sideline on a short week. If Detroit controls the clock the way it did in the first half against New Orleans, the 4.5 has to survive a game with fewer possessions than the total suggests.
Weather is not a factor: clear, 64 degrees, wind at three miles an hour at kickoff.
The Number I'd Take
Here is how I'd bet it, writing this Wednesday night with the first injury reports in and Thursday's finals still to come.
The public is hammering a team coming off a wildly impressive road win against last year's best defense, and when that happens I want the other side. Buffalo could not stop Stroud. Detroit could not stop Shough. One of those quarterbacks has Gibbs behind him and gets a look at a secondary Stroud already picked apart. I love Allen. I am not laying 4.5 with him four days after that game with every ticket in the building on his side.
Give me the Lions +4.5, at -108 on DraftKings. On Kalshi, the same position is "no" on "Buffalo wins by more than 4.5," which cost 48 to 49 cents on Wednesday night.
I also lean the under 53.5, and on Kalshi that is "no" on "over 53.5 points," at 47 to 48 cents. Two teams on four days' rest, one of them running Gibbs 29 times, is a slower game than the total says.
What Moves The Price From Here
- Thursday's Final Injury Reports. Bernard (calf) and Cole Bishop (knee) are questionable for Buffalo; Ty Johnson (hamstring) too. Detroit is already without Branch and Izien in the secondary. A Bernard out is the one line on either report that would move this number.
- The Total. 53.5 is the highest of the week with 86% of the money on the over. A move to 54 before kickoff would be public money; nothing on either injury report adds points.
- The 4.5 Itself. It has held since May. If it goes to 5 on Thursday, the Lions side gets cheaper, not better; the read does not change.
This one settles Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the final score.
